Remove filler words and silences from a screen recording
A first take is full of “um”, “uh” and waiting. Qreata finds them in a transcript made on your Mac and removes them from the “Script” panel and the “Trim” tool, and every removal can be undone.
7-day trial · $49 once · no subscription · Apple Silicon · macOS 14+The short answer
Qreata removes filler words and silences from recordings made in it that have a Microphone track. In the “Script” panel, “Remove filler words” cuts clear hesitations such as “um” and “uh”. In the “Trim” tool, “Needs review” lists each “like”, “actually” or “you know” with its own checkbox, and “Remove silences” cuts pauses from 0.8 seconds. Filler-word removal covers English and Russian speech. The transcript is made on your Mac, and the app costs $49 once.
Use it when
The content of the take is right and the delivery is loose.
- You narrate without a script and hear “um” before most sentences.
- You wait for pages to load and the video sits silent while you do.
- You would rather tidy one take than record a second one.
- The recording shows things you won’t upload to an online cleanup service.
It won’t help when
The speech is in another language, the file comes from elsewhere, or the problem is the sound itself.
- You speak German, Spanish, French or another language. Filler-word removal covers English and Russian speech only.
- The video was recorded in another app. Qreata doesn’t import video files.
- The recording has no Microphone track, or the audio has hum and echo. The tools need a Microphone track, and there is no noise reduction.
- You said the wrong thing. A cut can’t add words; record the sentence again.
What “Remove filler words” removes, and what it asks you about
Fillers come in two kinds, and Qreata treats them differently. A pure hesitation such as “um” or “uh” carries no meaning anywhere, so the “Remove filler words” button in the “Script” panel removes it. A word such as “like” or “so” is a filler in one sentence and a real word in the next: “so, um, click Save” against “do this so the form saves”. Those are listed under “Needs review” in the “Trim” tool, one checkbox per occurrence, and stay in the video unless you tick them.
The feature works on English and Russian speech and needs a Microphone track. The transcript itself is produced by a Whisper model that ships inside the app and runs without a network connection; the language is detected automatically.
| Word or phrase | Handling | Why |
|---|---|---|
| um, uh | Removed by “Remove filler words” | Pure hesitation, never carries meaning |
| like, so, well | “Needs review”, opt-in per occurrence | Often a real word in the sentence |
| actually, basically, literally | “Needs review”, opt-in per occurrence | Sometimes changes the meaning |
| you know, I mean | “Needs review”, opt-in per occurrence | Can be part of the point being made |
| sort of, kind of | “Needs review”, opt-in per occurrence | Can be a real qualification |
How to remove filler words and silences: a 9-minute tutorial
You record a 9-minute tutorial in one take, without a script. You say “um” before most steps, start a few sentences with “so, basically”, and at 3:40 and 6:15 you wait about six seconds for a report to load without saying anything.
- Open the recording in the editor and open the “Script” panel. The transcript is produced on your Mac.
- Click “Remove filler words”. Every “um” and “uh” is cut, picture and sound together.
- Open the “Trim” tool and go through “Needs review”. Every occurrence has its own checkbox: tick each “basically” that only opens a sentence, and leave unticked the “like” in “a field like this one”.
- Still in “Trim”, click “Remove silences”. Pauses of 0.8 seconds and longer are cut, including the two six-second waits at 3:40 and 6:15.
- Play the video from the start with the screen in view. At each load, check that the viewer still sees the result appear. If the cut jumps straight from the click to the next step, press ⌘Z and keep that pause.
- Where a pause has to stay but feels long, speed that segment up instead of cutting it.
- Export the MP4 and compare the length with the 9:00 you started from.
What a removed word does to the picture
Removing a word removes that moment from the video as well as from the audio. During most fillers nothing happens on screen, and the cut is invisible. If you were moving the pointer while you said “um”, the pointer jumps a short distance at the cut.
That is why the result needs one viewing rather than blind trust. Undo is ⌘Z and redo is ⇧⌘Z, with 100 steps.
- A filler said while the screen is still: remove it.
- A filler said while you drag, scroll or type: listen first. If the jump is visible, undo that one.
- A pause after a click that changes the screen: keep it, or shorten it by speeding the segment up to 4×.
- A pause before you start talking at 0:00: trim it by hand; that is faster than judging it by ear later.
Removing one phrase by hand in the transcript
The automatic tools catch patterns. A false start is not a pattern: “Click Export, sorry, click Share” has no filler word in it. For that, click a word in the “Script” panel to jump to it, Shift-click to select the range “Click Export, sorry,” and choose “Cut”. The selection is removed from the video and the audio.
The transcript is also useful after the video is finished. “Copy text” puts the narration on the clipboard, ready to paste under the video in a help article.
Limits of filler-word and silence removal
Filler-word removal covers English and Russian speech only and, like every transcript tool, needs a Microphone track. For other languages there is no word list, and you cut hesitations by hand in the transcript. “Remove silences” cuts pauses from 0.8 seconds; shorter gaps are left alone.
It works on recordings made in Qreata. The app does not import MP4 or MOV files, so a video from a phone, a call recorder or QuickTime can’t be cleaned here. There is no audio noise reduction and no normalization: removing words tightens the pacing, and the sound of the room stays as recorded.
Transcripts misread unusual names now and then, so check “Needs review” by listening, not only by reading.
Removing pauses with QuickTime Player, and a 10-minute test
The free route has no transcript. In QuickTime Player you find each pause by ear, split the movie into clips before and after it, and remove the clip in between. Apple lists trim, split into clips, rearrange, rotate or flip, add a clip, and remove audio or video as QuickTime’s editing features. For two pauses that is fine. For forty “um”s in nine minutes it is eighty splits.
Test it on your own voice: in the 7-day trial, record 3 minutes of unscripted explanation, click “Remove filler words” in the “Script” panel and “Remove silences” in the “Trim” tool, and watch the result once. Recording needs no account, and the license is $49 once for 3 Macs with no subscription.
Questions worth asking
How do I remove filler words from a video on Mac?
In Qreata, open the “Script” panel and click “Remove filler words”. “Um” and “uh” are cut, and words such as “like” or “you know” wait under “Needs review” in the “Trim” tool, one checkbox per occurrence. It works on recordings made in Qreata, in English and Russian.
Can I remove silences from a screen recording automatically?
Yes. “Remove silences” in the “Trim” tool cuts pauses of 0.8 seconds and longer. Replay the result, because a pause after a click lets the viewer see the screen change.
Which languages does filler-word removal support?
Two: English and Russian. The transcript detects the spoken language automatically, but there are no filler-word lists for other languages.
Does it remove every “like” and “so”?
No. Only pure hesitations are removed automatically. “Like”, “so”, “well”, “actually”, “basically”, “literally”, “you know”, “I mean”, “sort of” and “kind of” are opt-in under “Needs review” in the “Trim” tool, one occurrence at a time.
Is my audio uploaded for transcription?
No. The Whisper model is bundled with the app and runs on your Mac, without a network connection.
Can I undo a removal?
Yes. ⌘Z undoes it and ⇧⌘Z redoes it, with 100 steps of history.
