Replace Take: retake one part of a screen recording, keep the rest

Qreata is a Mac screen recorder with retakes built in. Select the range where the click or the sentence went wrong, record that range again, and the minutes before and after it stay as you recorded them.

The short answer

Replace Take is Qreata’s retake feature for Mac screen recordings: you select a range on the timeline, record only that range again, and the rest of the project stays as it was. A wrong click at 4:10 of a 6-minute demo becomes a 15-second retake of 4:05–4:20 instead of a second 6-minute take. It works on projects recorded in Qreata, on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later.

Use Replace Take when

The take is good and one bounded part of it is wrong.

  • One click, value or sentence is wrong and the viewer has to see the right one.
  • The mistake sits in the middle of a long take you don’t want to perform again.
  • One screen of your product changed after you published, and you still have the Qreata project.
  • You can put the app back into the state it was in just before the mistake.

It won’t help when

The fix is either smaller than a retake or bigger than one.

  • The mistake only needs to disappear. A cut is faster.
  • The whole flow changed. Record a new take.
  • The video was recorded in another app. Replace Take works on Qreata projects.
  • You record on Windows or an Intel Mac. Qreata needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later.

What is Replace Take in Qreata?

Replace Take is a selected-range retake. In the editor the tool is labelled Rerecord: hold Shift and drag across the timeline to mark the range, then record again for that range. The retake replaces all four tracks there (screen, camera, microphone and system audio), and everything outside the range is left alone.

It exists because a cut can only remove things. If you clicked Archive when you meant Publish, deleting the wrong click leaves a hole: the viewer never sees the right one. A retake puts the correct action where the mistake was.

The retake goes into an editable project that keeps screen, camera, microphone and system audio as four separate tracks. That is why the Segment menu can also redo one side only: Rerecord video · keep audio when the screen changed and the narration is still right, and Record voiceover · keep video when the screen is right and the wording was wrong.

How to redo part of a screen recording: a wrong click at 4:10

Say you recorded a 6-minute product demo. At 4:10 you clicked the wrong item and spent a few seconds backing out. The other 5:45 is fine. The repair looks like this:

  1. Find the mistake on the timeline. Here it starts at 4:05, where the cursor heads for the wrong item, and ends at 4:20, where you are back on track.
  2. Pick Replace Take (the Rerecord tool in the editor) and Shift-drag across 4:05–4:20 on the timeline. Put both ends on moments where the screen is still and you are between sentences. The range has to sit inside one segment; it can’t cross a cut.
  3. Return the app you are demonstrating to its 4:05 state: same window size, same page, same scroll position, same sample data.
  4. Record the correct action and its narration for the full 15 seconds. A retake shorter than the range is rejected, and a longer one is trimmed to the range. Screen, camera, microphone and system audio are all re-recorded, so keep the same microphone, and the same camera framing if your face is in the video.
  5. Play from 4:00 to 4:25. Listen for a doubled word or a volume jump, and watch for a cursor that jumps at either join. If a join is off, record the range again.
  6. Export the MP4. You re-recorded 15 seconds; the other 5:45 is your original take.

Cut vs Replace Take vs re-recording the whole video

Pick the smallest fix that leaves the video correct. For the 6-minute demo above, the three options compare like this:

Three ways to fix a mistake in a 6-minute screen recording
FixWhat it doesUse it forTime re-recorded
Cut (trim, split, delete)Removes materialA pause, a detour, a repeated sentenceNone
Replace TakeRe-records a selected rangeA wrong click, value or sentence the viewer must see correctedAbout 15 seconds
Full re-recordStarts a new takeA changed flow or a new scriptAll 6 minutes

How long should the retake range be?

Long enough to cover everything the mistake touched. A wrong value typed into a form at 2:30 may still be visible on the summary screen at 3:10, so the range is 2:30–3:10, not the keystroke alone.

  • Start on a still screen, a second or two before the cursor begins moving toward the mistake.
  • End on a screen state the original take also reaches, so the next original second follows on from it.
  • Start and end between sentences, never mid-word.
  • Keep the range inside one segment. A range can’t cross a cut.
  • Plan to fill it: a retake shorter than the range is rejected, and a longer one is trimmed to fit.
  • If the range grows past half the video, a new take is usually quicker.

What Replace Take can’t do

Replace Take does not restore your app for you. You bring the demonstrated software back to the right state, and you match your own voice, pace and framing. Record the retake a week later in a different room and viewers may hear the join.

It has three hard rules. The range must sit inside one segment and can’t cross a cut. The retake has to be at least as long as the range, or it is rejected; anything past the end of the range is trimmed off. And Replace Take replaces the whole range: screen, camera, microphone and system audio together. To redo one side only, use Rerecord video · keep audio or Record voiceover · keep video in the Segment menu.

It works on projects recorded in Qreata, and Qreata does not import video files, so keep the project after you export. The project stays editable: open it next month, retake one range and export again. The MP4 alone is not enough for a later retake. Qreata is in beta and runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 Sonoma or later. There is no Windows, Intel or browser version.

A 10-minute test of Replace Take

The 7-day trial has every feature, and recording needs no account. Record a 2-minute walkthrough of your own product and click the wrong thing on purpose around the 1:00 mark. Retake those 10 seconds, export the MP4, and watch the join in the place where you normally publish.

If you can’t spot the join, you have your answer. The Personal license is $49 once for 3 Macs, not a subscription.

Questions worth asking

Can I re-record part of a screen recording without starting over?

Yes. In Qreata you Shift-drag the range on the timeline with Replace Take (the Rerecord tool in the editor) and record only that range again. The rest of the recording stays as it was.

Is Replace Take the same as cutting or trimming?

No. A cut removes material. Replace Take records new material for the selected range, which is what you need when the viewer has to see the corrected action.

Does Replace Take work on videos recorded in other apps?

No. Qreata does not import video files; Replace Take works on projects recorded in Qreata, which keep the editable tracks. Keep the project after export if you expect to revise the video.

Does Replace Take require Qreata Cloud?

No. Recording and editing happen on your Mac. Qreata Cloud is optional paid hosting for sharing a video by link.

Does Replace Take work on Windows?

No. Qreata is a native Mac app for Apple Silicon and macOS 14 Sonoma or later. There is no Windows, Intel or browser version.

How much does Qreata cost?

$49 once for the Personal license at the current early-bird price: 3 Macs and all future updates, with no subscription. Team is $149 once for up to 50 Macs. The trial runs 7 days with every feature.

MAKE THE NEXT TAKE COUNT

Run the ten-minute test.

Record a two-minute walkthrough and make one mistake on purpose. Select that range, use Replace Take, and export the MP4. The trial is the full app for seven days, with no account. If it earns a place in your workflow, it is $49 once: a lifetime license with no subscription.
