QREATA / Alternatives

Screen Studio alternatives, with prices and trade-offs.

Screen Studio now costs $29 a month or $108 a year, and new buyers can no longer get a one-time license. Below are five alternatives with list prices, what each does best, and the one limitation that should stop you from picking it.

7-day trial · $49 once · no subscription · Apple Silicon · macOS 14+

The short answer

The best Screen Studio alternative for one-time pricing on a Mac is Qreata: $49 once for 3 Macs, with Replace Take to re-record one section inside the project. CleanShot X ($35 once) is the pick if you also want screenshots, Loom ($18 per user per month) if your team needs comments and Windows, and Camtasia ($179.88 a year) for courses with captions and quizzes. OBS Studio is free but has no editor.

Switch from Screen Studio if

The subscription or the one-recording project is what bothers you. These triggers justify a move:

  • You record a few demos a year, and $108 a year (or $29 for a single month) is more than those videos are worth to you.
  • You want a license you pay for once. Screen Studio no longer sells one-time licenses to new buyers.
  • You fix mistakes by re-recording. A Screen Studio project holds one recording, and multi-clip recordings are still “Planned” on its roadmap.
  • You want a refund window. Screen Studio’s terms state that fees are non-refundable.

Stay with Screen Studio if

It is still the stronger tool for several jobs, and no single option below covers all of them:

  • You edit caption text or export the transcript. Qreata burns captions into the video in one fixed style and has no caption file.
  • You want cursor smoothing. Qreata records the cursor as it moved.
  • You record an iPhone or iPad over USB.
  • You export at 4K 60 fps, as GIF, or in vertical and square formats.
  • You share through the included links: 1080p at 60 fps, videos up to 30 minutes, with comments.
  • You use an Intel Mac. Screen Studio has an Intel build; Qreata does not.

Each option wins a different job. Prices are from the vendors’ own pages.

Why people look for a Screen Studio alternative

Price is the first reason. Screen Studio is sold only as a subscription: $29 a month, or $9 a month billed yearly, which comes to $108 a year. One-time licenses are no longer sold to new buyers, and the terms of service state that fees are non-refundable. Older one-time licenses remain valid, so this affects you only if you are buying now.

The second reason is how mistakes get fixed. A Screen Studio project holds one recording. You can cut anywhere on the timeline, but the documentation describes no command to re-record a section, and “Multi-clip recordings” sits on the public roadmap as Planned. A wrong click in minute four means cutting it out or recording the whole demo again.

Slow exports on long recordings are a recurring complaint in public reviews, not a documented fact. Screen Studio is also Mac-only, which rules it out for a mixed team.

Screen Studio alternatives compared: price, best use, main limitation

We make Qreata, so it is listed first, and here is the honest version of where it belongs. Qreata is a native Mac recorder and editor for $49 once (3 Macs, future updates included) with a 7-day full trial and no account. It fits if you record product demos or tutorials and want a one-time price, Replace Take, and microphone and system audio on separate tracks, each with its own gain and mute.

Replace Take (the Rerecord tool in the editor) in practice: you click the wrong menu at 4:10 of a six-minute demo. Select 4:05–4:20 on the timeline and record screen, camera, microphone, and system audio again for that range only; the other 5:45 stays as it was. The project stays editable after export, so the same fix works next month. Zooms are added by hand or, with auto-zoom on clicks switched on, from your real clicks; each has its own duration, scale, and focus point and can be deleted. Recording, transcription, and export all happen on the Mac.

Qreata does not fit if you need Windows or an Intel Mac, iPhone or iPad capture, cursor smoothing, text annotations, viewer comments, courses with quizzes or SCORM, or screenshots. It is in beta, and export is MP4 (H.264) at 720p, 1080p, or 4K, always at 30 fps, with no 60 fps and no GIF. Captions are covered halfway: Qreata burns word-highlighted captions into the video from its on-device transcript, in one fixed style, and exports no SRT or VTT file. If you need to edit captions or export the transcript, stay with Screen Studio; for SRT files, pick Camtasia.

What Screen Studio and its alternatives cost over three years

Three years is a fair horizon for a recorder you keep. The figures are US list prices before tax, with no discounts, for one person.

Paying Screen Studio yearly costs $324 over three years; paying monthly costs $1,044. Qreata’s $49 is about 15% of the yearly figure. Loom’s annual billing takes up to 17% off the monthly price used here.

Which Screen Studio alternative to pick for your job

Match the tool to the video you make most often.

  • Product demos and tutorials where you misspeak or misclick: Qreata. Re-record the section and keep the rest.
  • Bug reports, annotated screenshots, and a quick clip in between: CleanShot X.
  • Status updates a mixed Mac and Windows team replies to: Loom.
  • A training course with quizzes and an LMS at the end: Camtasia Essentials or higher.
  • A live stream, or a raw recording with up to six separate audio tracks for another editor: OBS Studio.
  • iPhone or iPad app demos recorded over USB, or 4K at 60 fps with cursor smoothing: stay on Screen Studio.

Free Screen Studio alternatives: built-in macOS recording and OBS

The free route starts with what is already on your Mac. Press Shift-Command-5, choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion, pick a microphone under Options, and click Record. Stop with the button in the menu bar or Command-Control-Esc. The file lands on your desktop as a .mov.

System audio is the catch. Apple’s support article lists the Include System Audio option only for macOS 27 or later; on earlier versions the built-in recorder captures the microphone but not the sound of your apps. QuickTime Player handles basic edits such as trim and split; the automatic zoom and cursor smoothing people buy Screen Studio for are not among them.

OBS Studio is the free option with more control. It is open source, runs on macOS 13 or later as well as Windows and Linux, captures system or per-app audio on the Mac, and can write up to six audio tracks into one file. OBS recommends recording to MKV and remuxing to MP4. It records and streams; trimming, zooming, and captions need a separate editor.

How to switch from Screen Studio without losing work

No tool in this list opens Screen Studio projects, Qreata included. Treat the switch as new work in a new app while old projects stay where they are.

  1. Export every finished video you still need while your plan is active. Without a plan, Screen Studio keeps every feature except exporting video.
  2. Keep the original project files, and use Export → Extract raw recording files to save the screen, camera, and microphone files of anything you may rebuild later.
  3. List the shareable links you have published in docs and help articles, and decide where those videos will be hosted before you cancel.
  4. Check the renewal date. Access runs to the end of the paid period, auto-renewal is on, and fees are non-refundable.
  5. Record one new two-minute video in the new tool, make a mistake on purpose, fix it, and export. Compare that file with your last Screen Studio export before moving ongoing work.

Questions worth asking

Is there a free alternative to Screen Studio?

Yes. OBS Studio is free and open source, and macOS has a built-in recorder under Shift-Command-5. Expect a plain recording: OBS has no editor, and QuickTime Player covers basic edits such as trim and split. Loom’s free Starter plan is limited to 25 videos of 5 minutes at 720p.

Is there a one-time purchase alternative to Screen Studio?

Yes. Qreata is $49 once for 3 Macs with future updates included, and CleanShot X is $35 once with one year of updates ($19 a year after that, optional). Screen Studio itself no longer sells one-time licenses to new buyers.

Is there Screen Studio for Windows?

No. Screen Studio runs only on macOS, and so do Qreata and CleanShot X. On Windows, the options in this list are Loom, Camtasia, and OBS Studio.

What is the best open source alternative to Screen Studio?

OBS Studio is the open source option in this list. It records screen, camera, and up to six audio tracks for free on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It has no post-recording editor, so automatic zooms are not part of it.

Can I open Screen Studio projects in Qreata?

No. Qreata does not import Screen Studio projects. Export the finished videos, keep the original projects, and start new recordings in Qreata.

MAKE THE NEXT TAKE COUNT

Run the ten-minute test.

Record a two-minute walkthrough and make one mistake on purpose. Select that range, use Replace Take, and export the MP4. The trial is the full app for seven days, with no account. If it earns a place in your workflow, it is $49 once: a lifetime license with no subscription.
