A screen recording checklist for Mac, before the long take.
A six-minute demo is not ready because the red timer is running. The wrong window can be selected, your voice can be absent, and a notification can reveal a customer name. Use this checklist before a client walkthrough or software lesson; the final check is a short exported sample.

Before recording on Mac, check the capture source, microphone, required app sound, private data, readable text and recording destination. Record ten seconds with one spoken sentence and a representative click, then play back the saved file. Start the full take only when that sample contains the picture and sound you need.
The recording workflow
Rehearse the exact source
Open the window, menu and dialog the viewer must see. If you switch from slides to a browser, test that switch. A window recording may miss a separately opened slideshow or pop-up; choose a display only when the wider workspace is safe to capture.
Verify voice and required app sound
Speak one sentence into the selected microphone. If the demo includes sound from an app, play that sound too. Listen to both in the saved sample. Headphones help keep speaker playback out of the microphone; an input level alone does not prove that the saved file has audio.
Remove private content
Use a demo account with invented names. Close unrelated tabs and chat windows, hide notifications and check the address bar. In Qreata, excluded apps and manually chosen blur regions provide additional protection; neither finds sensitive information automatically.
Make the smallest important text readable
Use the intended capture size and open a label, tooltip or error message. Check the sample at the size your audience will watch. Increase the app’s text size or tighten the capture source if the label is unreadable; a camera overlay should not cover the action.
Check storage and the saved result
Confirm the recording folder and available disk space. In the free macOS recorder, Shift-Command-5 → Options lets you choose the microphone and save destination. In Qreata, check the recordings folder in Settings. Record ten seconds, stop and locate the saved result before the long take.
Export a sample and check it as a viewer
For an editable Qreata project, export a short MP4 before the full session. Open the MP4, listen and inspect the opening and closing frames. A working editor preview does not replace this test. If delivery uses a link, check access using the recipient’s intended permissions.
A repeatable ten-second test
Say “This is the microphone test”, open the menu you plan to demonstrate and play a short app sound if that sound matters. Stop. Play the recording with headphones: voice, expected app sound, menu text and capture boundaries should all be correct. The ten seconds are a suggested rehearsal length, not a product limit.
If one check fails, fix that source and repeat the sample. Keep this rehearsal separate from the lesson you intend to deliver so there is no setup conversation to trim from the beginning.
Which failures need another take?
A missing voice track or an uncaptured dialog cannot be recovered by raising the volume or adding a zoom. A readable but quiet recorded track may be adjustable; an absent track needs another recording. Check the sample before investing in the full explanation.
With Qreata, Replace Take (the Rerecord tool) can replace a range in an existing Qreata recording. The range must stay within one segment. The project remains editable after export, but Qreata does not import an existing QuickTime or Zoom MP4 to repair it.
When the built-in recorder is enough
For a simple screen-and-voice clip, start with the free macOS Screenshot recorder. This checklist applies whichever recorder you choose; the separate audio guide covers system-sound differences between macOS versions.
Qreata is useful when you also need an editable camera layout, independent voice and system-audio levels or a replacement take. It requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later, records at 30 fps and exports H.264 MP4. The full trial lasts seven days; Personal is $49 once for three Macs. Optional cloud hosting is separate.
Before you share
- The selected source includes the tested menu and window changes.
- The saved sample contains my voice and any required app sound.
- No private values or notifications appear, including first and last frames.
- Text is readable and the exported file opens correctly for delivery.
Questions about this workflow
How long should a test screen recording be?
Ten seconds is a practical starting point: include one spoken sentence, one click and any app sound. Extend it if your workflow needs a window switch or a longer action.
Can I use this checklist with the free Mac recorder?
Yes. Press Shift-Command-5 and use Options to check your microphone and save destination. Record and play back a sample before the full take.
Does a moving microphone meter prove the recording has sound?
No. It shows input activity, not the contents of the saved recording. Play the sample and listen.
Can Qreata fix a recording made in QuickTime?
No. Qreata edits its own recordings. For an existing QuickTime video, use an editor that supports file import.
