How to record a presentation with your webcam on Mac.
A client walkthrough often starts in slides and ends in a browser. Plan the recording around that switch: the viewer needs the presentation and your explanation, while speaker notes, account details and desktop notifications stay out of the video.
7-day trial · $49 once · no subscription · Apple Silicon · macOS 14+The short answer
For slides, a webcam and a live demo in one video, use a recorder that captures screen, camera and microphone together. In Qreata, choose the display or window, enable the camera, check your audio and record; repair a selected range with Replace Take, then export MP4. If you only need narrated slides, try your presentation app’s video export first.
The recording workflow
Decide what the viewer must see
Write three beats: the problem, one example and the next action. Put the slide deck and demo on the display you will capture. Close unrelated windows and use demo data instead of a real customer account.
Choose display or window capture
Use a display when the explanation moves from slides to another app. Use a window when the whole lesson stays in one window. Rehearse entering presentation mode: some apps open a separate slideshow window, so check that your chosen source still shows the slides.
Check camera, microphone and a sample
In Qreata, enable the camera and choose your microphone. Use Active source check, then record and play back ten seconds with a slide change and one spoken sentence. If the demo has sound, verify that sound too. Wear headphones to avoid speaker audio reaching the microphone.
Record the explanation in short sections
Explain one idea per slide. Leave room for your camera without covering a chart or button. Pause between sections if you need to prepare the next app. At the end, say the action the viewer should take instead of trailing off on the last slide.
Repair, review and export
In Qreata, use Replace Take (the Rerecord tool) on the failed range instead of restarting the whole presentation. Review the join and the audio, trim setup time, then export MP4. Qreata edits its own recordings; it does not import an existing PowerPoint video.
When to use PowerPoint export or the built-in Mac recorder
PowerPoint for Mac supports File > Export to MP4 or MOV, including recorded timings and narration in supported versions. That is a useful first choice for a deck without a live software demonstration. Check the exported result: Microsoft documents limitations for embedded media.
For a free screen-and-voice recording, use Shift-Command-5 and select your microphone in Options. This is enough when you do not need a camera overlay or a repairable project. The separate guide to recording with audio explains the differences between macOS versions.
Keep speaker notes and client data outside the recording
A display recording includes whatever appears on that display. Put presenter notes on an uncaptured display, or use a window source and check the preview. Full-screen mode alone is not a privacy boundary: rehearse switching apps and opening menus before the real take.
Use a sample workspace with invented contacts. Before sharing, watch the exported video through once and check slide transitions, browser tabs and the first and last frames. Do not rely on a camera bubble to cover private information.
When Qreata earns a place in this workflow
Qreata is useful when the slides are only part of the explanation and you expect to fix the recording afterwards. Screen, camera, microphone and system audio are separate internal tracks, and Replace Take repairs a time range without repeating the rest of the walkthrough.
The app requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. It records at 30 fps and exports H.264 MP4; it cannot import someone else’s recording. The full trial lasts seven days, then Personal costs $49 once for three Macs. Optional video hosting is separate.
Before you share
- The slideshow and live demo stay inside the tested capture source.
- Speaker notes, notifications and real customer data are absent.
- The exported video contains a clear voice and any required demo sound.
- The camera does not hide a chart, a button or the next action.
Questions about this workflow
Can I record a presentation and my face on a Mac?
Yes. Use a screen recorder with camera capture, such as Qreata. Record a ten-second sample first to verify the slideshow, microphone and camera together.
Do I need a screen recorder for narrated PowerPoint slides?
No. PowerPoint for Mac can export narrated slides as video in supported versions. A screen recorder becomes useful when you also show another app or want to edit the captured screen and camera.
Can I fix just one sentence in the presentation?
Yes, if you recorded it in Qreata. Select the affected time range and use Replace Take, labelled Rerecord in the app. Review the transition into and out of the replacement before exporting.
Can I import an existing presentation video into Qreata?
No. Qreata edits recordings made in Qreata, not imported MP4 or MOV files. Keep an existing exported deck video in an editor that supports file import.
