RECORDING REPAIR · BY QREATA

How to fix a mistake in a screen recording without re-recording all of it.

Five good minutes, then one wrong click. Starting over is the slowest fix and usually the one people reach for. There are three faster ones, two of them free on a Mac, and which one you need depends on what kind of mistake it was.

The short answer

You do not need to re-record the whole video. Cut the mistake out if nothing the viewer needs is lost; re-record only the affected section and insert it if the viewer needs the corrected action; or use Replace Take in Qreata to re-record a selected range in place. On a Mac the first two are free in QuickTime Player, whose editing features include trim, split into clips, and add a clip.

The recording workflow

  1. Find where the mistake starts and where its effects end

Play the recording and write down two timestamps: the last clean moment before the error and the first moment after it where the screen is correct again. A wrong click at 4:10 that you recover from by 4:18 gives you 4:05–4:20.

  2. Decide: cut or replace

If the video still makes sense with that range gone, cut it. If the viewer needs to see the correct action or hear the correct sentence, replace it.

  3. Put the app back in the earlier state

Return to exactly what was on screen at the first timestamp: same window size, same scroll position, same data, same open panels. Park the cursor where it was.

  4. Re-record only that range

Record the corrected action through to a screen that matches the second timestamp. Use the same microphone at the same distance, and speak at the pace of the surrounding material.

  5. Check both joins

Play from five seconds before the first join to five seconds after the second. Look for a cursor jump, a window shift, a volume change, or a repeated word.

  6. Export, and keep the source

Export the fixed video and keep the original file or project. The next correction should start from the source, not from a copy that has already been cut.

Three ways to fix a mistake in a screen recording

Every fix is one of these three. They differ in what happens to the gap the mistake leaves behind.

Which fix for which mistake

Match the mistake to the fix before you open any app. The most common error is replacing something that only needed a cut.

Cut the mistake out for free in QuickTime Player

If the mistake is at the very start or end, use Trim. Open the recording in QuickTime Player, choose Edit > Trim, drag the yellow handles so the mistake sits outside them, and click Trim. Everything outside the handles is removed.

A mistake in the middle needs a split. Apple’s QuickTime Player guide lists splitting a movie into clips among its editing features: split once before the mistake and once after it, remove the clip in between, and the two good parts play back to back.

The fastest version of this starts while you are still recording. When you fumble, stop talking, wait two seconds, and repeat the sentence or the click from a clean position. That silence is easy to find later and gives you a clean place to split.

Re-record part of a screen recording and insert it (free)

When the viewer needs the corrected action, a cut is not enough. The free route uses two QuickTime Player features Apple documents: split a movie into clips, and add a movie or clip.

This works, and it costs nothing. Its limits are practical. Nothing shows you the old take while you record the new one, so matching the join is done from memory. The original and the replacement are separate files you have to keep track of. And Apple’s list of QuickTime editing features has no zoom, no captions, and no audio track controls, so a level mismatch between the two takes stays in the result.

  1. Note the two timestamps around the mistake, for example 4:05 and 4:20.
  2. Put the app back in the state it was in at 4:05 and set the same window size and position.
  3. Record only the corrected section with Shift-Command-5, selecting the same area as the original.
  4. In QuickTime Player, split the original into clips at both timestamps and remove the clip with the mistake.
  5. Add the new recording as a clip and place it in the gap.
  6. Play across both joins, then save the result as a new file so the original stays intact.

How to make the join invisible

Viewers do not notice a replacement. They notice a jump. Five things cause one, and all five are under your control before you record the new section.

  • Window size and position: the same pixel size, in the same place on the same display. A window two pixels wider makes the whole frame twitch at the join.
  • Scroll position: scroll to the exact line that was at the top of the view. Use a heading or row number as a marker.
  • Cursor position: pause the original at the join, note where the pointer sits, and start the new take with it parked there.
  • Microphone distance: the same microphone, the same distance, the same room. Moving 10 cm closer is audible as a change in tone.
  • Speaking pace and energy: play the ten seconds before the join out loud, then record in the same rhythm. Start and end the replacement on a pause, never in the middle of a word.
  • App state: the same data, the same open panels, the same selected item. If the app shows a clock or a counter, expect it to differ and keep it out of frame if you can.

Replace Take in Qreata: a worked example with timestamps

The situation: a six-minute demo of an invoicing app. At 4:10 you click Archive where you meant Send. You notice, undo it, and are back on track by 4:18. The first 4:05 and the last 1:40 are good.

In Qreata, you pick Replace Take (the Rerecord tool in the editor) and Shift-drag across 4:05–4:20 on the timeline to re-record only that range. Before you record, put the invoice list back the way it looked at 4:05. Then click Send, say the sentence, and keep going until the 15 seconds are filled. You have re-recorded 15 seconds; the other 5:45 was never touched.

Three rules shape the range. It has to sit inside one segment and can’t cross a cut. A retake shorter than the range is rejected, and a longer one is trimmed to the range. And the retake replaces everything in that range at once: screen, camera, microphone and system audio. When only one side is wrong, the Segment menu has Rerecord video · keep audio and Record voiceover · keep video.

The same project also handles the smaller repairs. Local transcription shows your narration as text, word-level cuts remove a false start, Remove silences takes out the pauses, and Remove filler words takes out “um” and “uh”. Edits are non-destructive, with undo, so a fix that makes things worse costs one keystroke.

Replace Take works on recordings made in Qreata, and Qreata does not import video files, so keep the project and not only the exported MP4. The project stays editable after export. Qreata is in beta, runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, and costs $49 once with a full 7-day trial. The ten-minute test: record two minutes, make one wrong click on purpose, and replace it.

Worked example: fixing a wrong click at 4:10 in a 6-minute recording
RangeWhat is in itWhat you do
0:00–4:05Good opening and first three stepsKeep
4:05–4:20Wrong click at 4:10, undo, recovery by 4:18Select and re-record: 15 seconds
4:20–6:00Good final step and call to actionKeep

Before you share

  • The replaced range covers the mistake and everything it caused, with a pause at each end.
  • The window does not shift and the cursor does not jump at either join.
  • Voice level and tone match across the join when you listen on headphones.
  • No word is repeated or clipped where the takes meet.
  • The original recording or project is saved next to the fixed export.

Questions about this workflow

How do you edit a screen recording without re-recording?

Cut the mistake out. In QuickTime Player on a Mac, use Edit > Trim for the start or end, or split the movie into clips around the mistake and remove the bad clip. Re-record only when the viewer needs a corrected action, and then only that section.

How do I remove a mistake without restarting my recording?

Keep recording: stop talking, wait two seconds, and repeat the sentence or click from a clean position. Afterwards, cut the failed attempt. The pause gives you a clean place to split.

How do I fix a verbal mistake in a screen recording?

If you said it twice, cut the wrong attempt. If the sentence is wrong and there is no second attempt, re-record that section. In Qreata, local transcription lets you delete words from the text for small slips, and Record voiceover · keep video re-records the sentence over the same picture when the wording has to change; Replace Take redoes picture and sound together.

Can I re-record part of a screen recording in QuickTime Player?

Yes, manually. Record the corrected section as a new file, split the original into clips around the mistake, remove the bad clip, and add the new one. QuickTime Player has no feature that re-records a range in place.

Can Replace Take fix a video I already exported?

Yes, if it was recorded in Qreata and you kept the project: the project stays editable after export, so you open it, re-record the range and export again. No, if all you have is the MP4 or the video came from another tool. Qreata does not import video files, so use the cut or insert methods above.
