CleanShot X vs OBS Studio: quick Mac captures or a free streaming setup?
One of these is a $35 capture utility and the other is a free broadcast tool. They are compared because both record a Mac screen, yet they share almost no other feature.
7-day trial · $49 once · no subscription · Apple Silicon · macOS 14+The short answer
Pick CleanShot X ($35 once, Mac only) for everyday capture: annotated screenshots, scrolling capture, OCR, and short recordings you finish in Studio Mode with zooms and trims. Pick OBS Studio (free and open source on Mac, Windows, and Linux) for live streaming, scenes built from several sources, and recordings with up to 6 separate audio tracks. OBS records and streams but does not edit afterwards, so a finished video from OBS needs a second app.
Choose CleanShot X if
You capture many times a day and want the result ready in seconds.
- You need screenshots with annotation, scrolling capture, or OCR.
- You record short clips or GIFs and want smart zooms, cursor smoothing, and trims in the same app.
- You want a share link: CleanShot Cloud includes 1 GB on the Basic license.
- You work only on a Mac (macOS 13 or later).
- $35 once is acceptable, with a 30-day money-back guarantee instead of a trial.
Choose OBS Studio if
You need a production setup and are willing to configure one.
- You stream live to a platform.
- You build scenes from several sources and switch between them while recording.
- You need up to 6 separate audio tracks in one file for later mixing.
- You also record on Windows or Linux.
- Your budget is $0 and you already have a video editor.

Prices are US list prices before tax and can change; some vendors show local currency. Where a vendor’s documentation is silent on a capability, the cell says so instead of guessing.
CleanShot X vs OBS Studio pricing over 1 and 3 years
OBS Studio is free and open source, with no license, account, or watermark. CleanShot Basic is $35 once with one year of updates; after that the app keeps working, and more updates are an optional $19 a year. CleanShot Pro is $10 per user per month billed annually and adds unlimited cloud storage.
OBS’s price leaves out the editor you will need to trim, zoom, or fix a recording afterwards. If you already own one, OBS costs nothing. CleanShot has no free trial, so the 30-day refund window is your test period.
| Plan | Year 1 | 3 years | How it adds up |

Where CleanShot X is better and where OBS Studio is better
CleanShot X is better for anything short. Screenshots get annotation, scrolling capture, and OCR. Recordings go to MP4 (H.264) or GIF up to 4K, and Studio Mode, added in version 5.0 in September 2026, adds smart zooms, trims, cursor smoothing, motion blur, backgrounds, and vertical export. A cloud link with password protection and comments is one click away, and the cloud is optional.
OBS Studio is better for anything live or layered. You compose scenes from sources, add transitions and audio filters while recording, and stream to platforms. It records up to 6 separate audio tracks in one file and captures system or per-app audio natively on macOS 13 or later. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, Windows, and Linux.
OBS asks more of you before the first recording. You choose resolution, frame rate, and container yourself; OBS recommends MKV so a crash does not corrupt the file, then a remux to MP4. Standard video players play one audio track at a time, so a multitrack file is meant for an editor.
- Annotated screenshot for a bug ticket: CleanShot X.
- Two-hour live coding stream with a camera scene and a screen scene: OBS Studio.
- 30-second GIF of a new feature: CleanShot X.
- Podcast-style recording with voice, guest, and app audio on separate tracks: OBS Studio.
Can you fix a mistake without re-recording?
CleanShot X: you trim the mistake out in Studio Mode. A third-party test of Studio Mode in September 2026 found no way to re-record a section.
OBS Studio: there is no fix inside OBS. It records and streams, and repairing a take means opening the file in a separate video editor.
For a short clip, both answers lead to the same place: record it again. For a long tutorial, plan on a second tool.
A third option: Qreata, for tutorials you edit and repair after recording
Qreata is a Mac recorder with its own editor, which OBS lacks, and it can re-record a section, which the test above found CleanShot’s Studio Mode cannot. With Replace Take you select a range on the timeline, such as 1:20–1:35, and record only that again. Microphone and system audio stay separate, each with its own gain and mute, and zooms can be generated from your clicks.
It costs $49 once for 3 Macs with future updates, and the full app is free for 7 days with no account. It is the pick if your recordings are narrated demos or tutorials a few minutes long.
It is in beta and does neither product’s main job: no screenshots or OCR, no live streaming or scenes. It also needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, exports MP4 at 30 fps only, and has no SRT or raw-track export; captions can be burned into the video.
Who should pick neither
If your real need is team sharing or course production, neither tool is built for it.
- Video messages with viewer comments across Mac and Windows: Loom, free Starter plan, Business at $18 per user per month.
- Polished marketing demos with captions and 4K at 60 fps: Screen Studio, $108 a year on annual billing, Mac only.
- Courses with quizzes and SCORM export: Camtasia Essentials, $179.88 a year.
Using both, and switching between them
There are no projects to migrate, and the two do not conflict: OBS is free, so you can keep CleanShot for screenshots and quick clips and open OBS for streams. If you leave CleanShot, existing CleanShot Cloud links stay with your CleanShot account. If you leave OBS, your recordings are ordinary video files that any editor opens.
